Soniat House offers 31 rooms in six categories, offering plenty of options for a small hotel. Even the most basic rooms are spacious, with room for a sitting area in addition to a queen (or larger) bed. Although she finds it difficult to become attached to the child, it finally happens and she decides to adopt her.

Enraged, the father takes on the gang single-handedly and murders them. Setting aside the modern details, this is roughly the plot of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring." There is also sound work by Krug (Garret Dillahunt), the convincingly evil leader of a pack of degenerates.
This sets the stage for the “revenge” part of the rape-revenge scenario, when the gang, having bloodily dispatched the two women, hole up at a nearby home they’re late to realize is Mari’s. What follows is another messy fight to the death, this time between the grieving parents and their vile guests. Mari Collingwood plans to attend a concert with her friend Phyllis Stone for her seventeenth birthday. Her parents, Estelle and John, express their concern about her friendship with Phyllis but let her go and give her a peace symbol necklace. Before the concert, Mari and Phyllis encounter Junior while trying to buy marijuana.
And such a church was built in the 1300s and still stands at Karna in Sweden. No churches will be built because of the other films, no parents will ask forgiveness and few members of the audience will think they should. These films are in the horror genre, which once tried to scare the audience, but now invites the audience to share the fear and pain of the characters. It is the one genre that can lead the box office without name stars, perhaps because its fans know that big stars very rarely appear in one (I'm not thinking of films where story is first, but those in which graphic violence is first). The Last House on the Left is a 2009 revenge horror thriller film directed by Dennis Iliadis and written by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth. A remake of the 1972 film of the same name, it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Aaron Paul, Spencer Treat Clark, Riki Lindhome, Martha MacIsaac, and Sara Paxton.
The Last House on the Left was theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2009, and was a modest box office success, grossing $46 million against its $15 million budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with several deeming it worthy of praise in comparison to other horror films and remakes in general, while others considered it inferior to the original. I am uninterested in being "consistent." I approach the new film as simply a filmgoer. Other scenes, while violent, fell within the range of contemporary horror films, which strive to invent new ways to kill people, so the horror fans in the audience will get a laugh.
Later, when Junior is in the midst of heroin withdrawal, Estelle enters the bathroom to check on him and sees Mari's peace symbol necklace around his neck. She finds blood-soaked clothing in their luggage and overhears them talking about Mari's death and her disposal in a nearby lake. Chilling remake of the 1972 cult classic chronicles the gripping tale of homicidal maniacs who seek refuge at an out-of-the-way house that happens to be the home of their victim's parents, who learn of the killers' crime and seek revenge. The parents accidentally find out the identities of the killers, because of a stolen locket and some blood-stained clothing in their baggage.

Krug hides, and attacks John and Justin when they search for him. Justin is stabbed by Krug, but with a combined effort from Emma and John, Krug is knocked unconscious. John, Emma, Mari, and Justin then leave in the boat for the hospital.
They're surprisingly good, and I especially admired the work of Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn as the parents of one of two girls who go walking in the woods. It is no longer only the father who takes revenge; both parents work together, improvising, playing a deadly chess game in their own home, which they know better than the villains. We are only human, we identify with the parents, we fear for them, and we applaud their ingenuity. After they change out of their bloody clothes, the gang goes to the Collingwoods' home, masquerading as traveling salesmen. The gang finds photos of Mari and realizes it is her home.
After a scuffle between her and Estelle, she falls into the backyard swimming pool where her throat is slit by Estelle. The sheriff arrives just as John kills Krug with the chainsaw. A storm forces Krug, Francis, Sadie, and Justin to seek refuge at a nearby house. Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house.

The matzo ball soup was darker in color than any I had eaten before and I almost thought the broth was from a beef stock, but Clement assured me it was chicken. It included two good-sized matzo balls, more chicken pieces than Schreiber’s despite the smaller size, as well as the requisite ingredients you expect with this dish. The best part of the sandwich was the banana peppers, which provided the biggest taste pop I got. There wasn’t nearly enough oil and vinegar to awaken the rest of the ingredients, so the sandwich lacked flavor a bit. It was served on good rye bread with a nice grainy mustard.
There was no confusion as to where to order (given this is a standalone location and not a stall in a crowded food hall) and everything was ready in a timely manner. Meshugganah, the deli concept inside Joan’s, was initially a pop-up by Rob Clement, who previously worked for Jon Dressler at The Porter’s House restaurant. Joan’s Bakery & Deli, which opened in Midtown’s Metropolitan shopping center on Dec. 15, was also hopping when I visited early on a Saturday afternoon. And serving takeout only, with some tables right outside the door as well as others nearby facing the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.

Growing up in the Windy City, I was used to Jewish delis; I always loved pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup on those cold days, of which there were many. At Joan’s you’ll find many of Charlotte’s favorite baked goods, including the cakes made famous at the Rare Roots family of restaurants. Stop in for a slice and a coffee, order a whole cake, grab lunch from our deli menu, and take a seat on our patio overlooking the greenway with the best view of Uptown Charlotte.
Our Menus
I was a bit disappointed with my first outing but planned to return the following week, as issues are to be expected upon opening any new venture. I lived for 21 years near Manny’s Deli, an institution in Chicago for more than 70 years, and I was there enough that the pastrami slicer knew me. I was now ready for my return visit to Schreiber’s to see how they had worked their kinks out over the past week and compare the pastrami and knish to Joan’s. What I have never missed out on is Mom’s cheesecake, a staple dessert from Dressler’s restaurants that comes from his mother’s recipe — his mother being the bakery’s namesake, Joan — that never disappoints.
The roll makes the sandwich, so this story was over before it started; I would take a pass on The Mullbery for that reason alone. I ordered the Mullbery, which featured soppressata, capicola, mortadella, prosciutto and aged provolone, with the usual accompaniments of oil and vinegar with mayo on a hero roll. Like Joan’s, the slices were thick, but they were fattier and had a more peppery taste. If this were a blind date, we would have clicked instantly. The potato knish had a more solid potato interior, and though I preferred Joan’s, you couldn’t go wrong with either. The new location was run efficiently compared to my first encounter at Schreiber’s.
Unfortunately, they were out of knishes already, as well as rye bread and potato salad. Deli St is an innovative concept aiming to offer healthy quick meal options for young professionals and neighborhood residents that are always on the go. In a hip neighborhood full of diverse eateries, breweries and coffee shops Deli St will draw the difference by baking their own goods, offering vegetarian and non-vegetarian options as well as a full coffee bar. When I learned that we would close out 2023 in Charlotte with the opening of two new Jewish delis on the fringes of Uptown, my Chicagoan heart skipped a beat.

At Schreiber’s, which I visited on Dec. 23, one day after its opening, I found a long line and items already running out just a few hours into the day. It looks like I wasn’t the only one in town longing for a Jewish deli.
They apparently got their shit together in terms of inventory, as they weren’t out of anything I asked for. I ordered the Bowery, which features a half-pound of house-smoked pastrami with deli mustard on seedless rye bread. The matzo ball soup came in a large container with three golf-ball-sized matzo balls, oodles of carrots, celery, a few slivers of onion and some small chicken pieces. The chicken soup broth left me neutral as it wasn’t bursting with flavor — not good, not bad. With 40 + menu items including vegetarian and vegan options, you can be sure to find a sandwich, wrap, or salad that fits your liking. It was definitely an above-average sandwich, though maybe not my dream date. The schmear of chopped liver was smooth and creamy, reminding me of the way my mother used to make it. Dressler, owner of Joan’s and other restaurants in the Rare Roots Hospitality Group, told me they plan on extending hours in the spring. They will also provide food service at Lost Worlds Brewery once they open their location next door.
Schreiber’s describes themselves as a New York-style deli on Facebook, but I would describe them more as a combo of a Jewish deli and sandwich shop, offering turkey and roast beef options, plus an Italian sub and a veggie sandwich. Perhaps a good way to hedge your bets among a consumer base not as familiar with or picky about Jewish delis as yours truly. I have at times gone out of my way to pick up just dessert from Fin & Fino, Dressler’s closest restaurant to my house, when I’ve had the urge for her cheesecake. Now I have another location for Mom’s cheesecake, not to mention the carrot, coconut, and chocolate cake options offered up at Joan’s. I ordered a 7-ounce pastrami sandwich (they also have a 10-ounce option), with the matzo ball soup, a schmear of chopped liver on the side and a potato-and-onion knish. In fact, I stopped at Schreiber’s right after the test to try out the matzo ball soup and a knish.
We are regrouping this summer with hopes of finding a permanent location to call home and serve you every day. The good news for Charlotte is that our city now has two new solid choices when it comes to Jewish delis, so if that’s something you’ve been missing from your lunch rotation, I would give them both a try and see which you prefer. Worst of all was the roll, which I found to be dense and flavorless with no crunch.
Maybe it doesn’t matter, especially at West LA’s Mogumogu which specializes in well-sauced, fully-loaded mazemen with toppings like chashu and poached eggs. Where to Slurp Ramen Around Boston
Originally from Tokyo, Tonchin LA takes over a prime Melrose Avenue location with sleek vibes, a cocktail bar, and upscale ramen bowls. Everyone orders the smoked dashi with whole clams or the tonkatsu broth. This Northern California transplant serves spectacular tonkotsu ramen with a deeply flavored broth and a fully customizable bowl where diners can choose from different noodles, tare, and toppings. The waits are at least 20 minutes and upwards of an hour during prime meal hours. This all-ramen restaurant features a signature bowl with thick noodles and a dense broth that’s chock-full of garlic and pork back fat.
Eater LA main menu
Grilled over binchotan charcoal, the tender, juicy chicken parts taste best when paired with a dash of hot mustard, or maybe some ginger and green onion paste. The later hours (Torigoya stays open until 11pm on weekends) make this cozy spot perfect for an excellent booze-laced late-night meal in Little Tokyo. This Michelin-recommended ramen shop has a slightly more upscale and polished feel than competing shops, with some bowls reaching and surpassing $30. The results are terrific for those willing to shell out a few extra bucks, especially the signature shina soba ramen with an intense broth, wontons, and chashu. For a more creative combination, try the whole lamb chops swimming in spicy red soup.

Huge bowls of ramen feature thick, house-made noodles, and you can add an extra portion of the sweet, savory beef to most bowls (which you absolutely should do). The restaurant’s name means “talk about your dreams,” and you'll likely be asked to share yours out loud with everyone after finishing your meal, so be warned. This Connecticut-based ramen joint has locations throughout New England, and opened up spots in the Seaport and Brookline this past year. The restaurant specializes in ramen and pho, but they also offer boozy bubble tea, like the creamy Thai iced tea spiked with whiskey. The spicy miso ramen has a nice kick but won’t have you reaching for your drink with every slurp, and the tonkotsu is made with a Hakata-stylem 24-hour pork broth that’s packed with flavor.

The tsukemen’s broth is tinged with a vinegary kick and served with flat noodles that work well for dipping and slurping. With ramen for me, it’s all about the broth and the noodles, but with a heavy emphasis on the broth. The broth for the kurogoma tan tan men was on hit and I definitely recommend this ramen to anyone who is not sure what to get. This woman-run cocktail bar is a breath of fresh air—of the salt-air variety.
The two bowls of ramen on the Hojoko menu fit right in at the offbeat izakaya in the shadow of Fenway Park. Both ramen styles come garnished with cured eggs, and can be kicked up with an optional topping of spicy fermented chili relish. All this, and they’re available via takeout, app delivery, and dine-in. The Back Bay location of this Japanese chain is a prime spot for students and tourists to get a fast, nourishing bowl of ramen. The signature tonkatsu is made by simmering pork bones for 20 hours, resulting in a deeply flavorful broth. Santouka also offers the lesser-known toroniku ramen, made with tender pork cheek meat.

While the area has long been a go-to among Angelenos for sushi, ramen and Japanese comfort food, a handful of newer destination-worthy eateries have moved in alongside old-school joints, giving even more reason to explore the area’s dining scene. The neighborhood is small—just a few blocks, really—so a fantastic bowl of noodles isn’t more than a few steps away from a diverse array of sushi spots catering to every seafood whim and price point. This tsukemen specialist took over sister restaurant Aizen Udon, which moved to the Little Tokyo Marketplace a few blocks over. Tsukemen Aizen’s deluxe offering serves thinly shaved pork in a flower-like formation, along with a mound of thick noodles, spinach, lotus root, and boiled eggs. The star — a side bowl of fishy, umami-riddled dipping broth — coats every dipped noodle with an explosion of salty, fatty flavor. This diminutive ramen shop is the best place for Japanese noodles on the Westside.

A 20-seat establishment wedged into Coolidge Corner’s Arcade Building, Ganko Ittetsu Ramen is another popular spot that’s been more accessible with the dawn of takeout ramen. Try the paitan ramen, which has a thick, cloudy, chicken-based broth (paitan means “white broth” in Japanese) and comes topped with pork chashu and scratch-made noodles. Though the shop was initially designed to be impermanent, Somerville folks have charmed the owners enough that they decided to stay after 1,000 days. The shop also offers a variety of umami-rich small dishes like norishio fries, ponzu shishito, edamame shiro-miso hummus and sushi. Take a trip on the Red Line to Quincy for ramen made with a savory, pork bone broth, with tonkotsu, miso and tan tan on the menu, along with a vegetarian option.
Pho and ramen are both offered; in addition to the noodle bowls for slurping, a good selection of snackable items including dumplings, egg rolls, and fried rice are on the menu. Long before opening her Asian-Spanish fusion restaurant Pagu, chef Tracy Chang was involved with a pop-up called Guchi’s Midnight Ramen. Topped with a 6-minute soy egg, umami oil, and oyster sauce-marinated pork, the cult-favorite ramen—one of Boston’s first bowls—is still on the chef’s menu.
The sparse setting at this Davis Square ramen joint allows guests to solely focus on the steaming bowls of delicate, Osaka-style ramen in front of them. Tsurumen opened in Boston with the goal to only operate for 1000 days, however, in July of 2021, the team announced it was here to stay. Check their social media for special collaborations with different chefs if you want a guaranteed spot, or just go when you’re hungry for excellent ramen and wait in line. Half the fun is ordering too many toppings on your first visit, which will arrive one after another in a parade of tiny bowls. While Little Tokyo has plenty of ramenyas, we find ourselves coming back to Shin-Sen-Gumi for its rich yet light tonkotsu broth and the always satisfying ability to design your own bowl.
You’ll find a surprisingly extensive (and well priced!) menu featuring a choice of ramen soup base—soy sauce, miso, spicy miso, curry and more—with toppings ranging from ground pork to veggies. A steaming hot bowl of ramen, filled with warming noodles and topped with meats, eggs and vegetables is a meal that warms the body and soul. Boston has a bevy of excellent ramen shops spanning from Fenway to the Seaport—and everywhere in between.
More deluxe curry plates of hamburg and steak are also available, but you can’t go wrong with chicken katsu curry rice, their most popular dish. Originally from New York, this small ramen chain has two local outposts in Somerville’s Assembly Row, and South Bay Center in Dorchester, as well as one sister restaurant Yakitori Totto, a restaurant specializing in grilled chicken. While much of the Boston ramen scene focuses on pork bone-based tonkotsu broths, it’s all about the chicken at Totto; there are three variations of a chicken paitan (white, cloudy broth) ramen on the menu, as well as a vegetarian option.
Stay alert while parking, in particular, and in the evenings, when the neighborhood’s bustling crowds tend to thin out. That said, the neighborhood stays fairly busy (and thus feels safer) on weekends and special event days, especially near the Japanese Village Plaza and the Little Tokyo Galleria indoor mall. Native to Japan’s northernmost main island, Santouka Hokkaido Ramen has dozens of locations around the globe—including Harvard Square, Allston, and Back Bay. While several ramen styles are represented on the menu, the signature shio (salt) broth is known for its silky texture and comparative lightness. If you’d like to make it heartier, you can always order extra pork and a soft-boiled egg to your bowl. Currently operating in the Honda Plaza parking lot, the Mermaid offers nautical-themed cocktails that are fruity, herbaceous and fun, and once a few of its rum-based concoctions have left you feeling peckish, well-made L.A. Bar fare like buffalo wings, cilantro chicken tacos and tater tots will keep you sated until last call. The Mermaid also offers a killer happy hour for drinks, with $7 to $10 cocktails all day on Sunday and 5 to 8pm on weekdays. These days, most of L.A.’s very best Edomae-style omakase meals require setting an alarm to snag a difficult Tock reservation, plus the willingness to dine early or on a random, often inconvenient weekday.
It offers a great selection of bowls and izakaya-style small plates that “you have not seen anywhere,” proclaims owner Yasu Sasago. Once a beloved ramen destination in the Super 88 Food Court, Pikaichi has since settled into Medford as its permanent home. Pikaichi serves eight types of ramen, two of which have a vegetable-based broth. Heat-seekers should opt for the spiciest ramen on the menu, the jigoku ramen; the word jigoku means “hell” in Japanese and is adopted by ramen shops to describe the spiciest variety on its menu.

This tantanmen specialist on Sawtelle comes from the prolific Tsujita group, which already has two standout noodle restaurants on the block. What’s different about Killer Noodle is its homage to the spicy, Chinese-inflected tantanmen. With sesame- and pepper-laden noodles, the ramen is served as a noodle soup or “dry” on a platter. After waiting forever for sushi or ramen at one of Little Tokyo’s cult-classic spots, duck into Wolf & Crane, a casual, dive bar-lite kind of place with communal tables, comic-print wallpaper and classic oldies bellowing from the sound system. A neighborhood bar where the Japanese whiskey is plentiful and the cocktails are creative (and often affordably priced), Wolf & Crane makes for a perfect gathering spot for a small birthday group or solo drinking.
Masuo Onishi settled in Davis Square, Somerville, to share his unique perspective on ramen, having grown up eating the dish in Osaka, Japan. With springy noodles handcrafted in-house, the chef shares his own ramen story at Tsurumen through special noodle bowls inspired by his passions alongside signature menu staples. It’s all worth digging into—but you can’t go wrong with the original. Tsurumen’s Signature Shio Ramen has an invitingly clear chicken broth with boldly savory toppings, including crisped-up slices of chashu pork, bamboo shoots, minced red onion, and scallions. Next-door to sister spot Shōjō, this Chinatown ramen shop brings the ruckus with a hip-hop soundtrack and equally loud food.
Organic dishes,
Ramen is the warm blanket of the food world, providing solace through the changing of the seasons. The Boston area is a treasure trove for this comforting Japanese dish, and plenty of restaurants serve a variety of bowls that should not be overlooked. This charming Japanese diner's been around since 1972—and while Suehiro recently relocated from Little Tokyo to Downtown L.A., the unpretentious menu still offers just as much old-school Japanese comfort from a much larger, sleeker dining room. Tuck into decades-plus old recipes like curry udon, shrimp tempura, straightforward donburi and okonomi combo platess. Tuck away into one of the booths for more privacy, or sidle up to the bar and watch day and night street views of Tokyo play out on a large flat-screen TV, no matter the time of day. Speaking of time of day, this spot is open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Many of the area’s family-run shops and eateries date back decades, some older than World War II, and the neighborhood is full of delicious Japanese and non-Japanese food alike, a wide array of Asian sweets and even a few late-night cocktail bars. Our room was located by the pool and had a private patio. The pool was generally quiet, there were always available chairs. From the moment you enter The Kimpton Everly Hotel’s welcoming, sun-drenched lobby—Hollywood’shippest gathering place—you’ll want to drop your bags, post up on a couch, and stay a while.
The complimentary continental breakfast, which is part of the $35 Daily Amenity Fee so it’s not really complimentary, was underwhelming. However, the kitchen area was beautiful (pictures below are of the same table, but from opposite corners of the room). There were several seating areas in the space between the house and the back rooms. When booking more than 6 rooms, different policies and additional supplements may apply.
